Producing a heterogeneous body of photographs which offer themselves to affect as well as controlled close looking, Benjamin Jones has been developing a project in which photography is a technology of observation and visual reproducibility embedded in our experience of the world. Working often in environments dedicated to focused study and close observation, including natural history museums, botanical gardens, and protected landscapes, his work might be mistaken for being concerned predominantly with its subject matter. This recalls a concern in the works of conceptual artists to explore the structures of meaning and the disciplinary boundaries and categories of art without sacrificing an interest in the world and its appearances. - Duncan Wooldridge
